The EBA was approved in December 2019 with 65% of Telstra`s employees. The Fair Work Commission approved the agreement last week and begins its work today until its nominal expiration in September 2021. Finally, the two sides agreed in December 2019, after the unions agreed on a 1.8 per cent pay increase for the first year and a 2 per cent hurdle in the second year, while some Job Family employees receive a guaranteed minimum of one per cent. Section 45 has also been amended to maintain the same benefits when workers are transferred to a Teltra subsidiary. The Fair Work Commission has approved Telstra`s Bargaining Agreement (EBA) 2019-2021 and will enter service today. In particular, a clause, Article 45, caused tensions between the two parties, which would allow Telstra to lay off workers and then offer them jobs in their subsidiaries on packages „no less good” and „substantially the same” as their current jobs. Negotiations began in 2018, when Telstra announced its ambitious Telstra2022 strategy, which included cutting thousands of jobs, streamlining the telecommunications company`s structure and reducing costs. Other workers who were classified as labour and workstream workers, including some CEPU members, were offered a 1.5% pay increase. The union maintained the proposal for a reduction in wages from the current annual lifetime increases of 2 per cent and an average wage increase of 2.7 per cent, and voted against it.
This marks the end of several months of negotiations between Telstra and the unions, including some of their employees, including the Communication, Electrical and Plumbing Union of Australia (CEPU). Negotiations lasted months before trade unionists demanded a 24-hour work stoppage in March 2019, as talks stalled.
